Oil Change Why And When

Oil Change.... Why and When?

Just like blood or water to the body, engine oil plays a vital role in your car. Without it, all the parts that make your car go will seize and just stop working all together. Yet, when it comes to routine maintenance, an oil change is one of the most inexpensive services.

Oily Role

Engine oil has 3 important functions in today’s combustion engine:

1. Lubes. It helps keep engine components working smoothly. It lets metal press against metal without causing damage - for instance, pistons moving up and down cylinders. Without oil, the friction created between two surfaces can generate so much heat that components weld together and the engine seizes.

2.  Draws heat away from the combustion chamber. The engine becomes hot during the combustion process and oil helps draw heat away.

3.  Prevents deposits. It helps prevent carbon and other impurities from accumulating in your car’s engine.

What ... Why ... When and How?

What happens during an oil change?

An oil change is pretty straightforward. The car is raised on a ramp or jack and old motor oil is allowed to drain in a pan. Once old oil has drained out, it is replaced with fresh, new motor oil. The oil filter is also replaced at the same time.

Why do it?

Your engine is complex and contains numerous moving parts. Oil ensures that all these parts are moving smoothly. That is why it is important that the oil in your engine is at an optimum performance level.

  • Without oil, your engine would just stop working

  • Oil quickly becomes dirty, and the dirt is what cause your engine parts to wear out.

  • Regular oil change help extend the life of your car's engine, ensures that your engine runs at an optimal level and that your vehicle is fuel efficient.

  • Regular maintenance help save you repair money because it can reduce engine problems.

  • Oil has additives that have the ability to neutralize harmful acids. However, over time, the additives get used up and stop being effective.

When and how often do I need an oil change?

Every car manufacturer has a slightly different oil change schedule. However, the usual recommendation is every 3,000 miles. Recently, however, more and more are inclined to recommend that oil be changed every 5,000 miles. And in case of high performance synthetic lubricants, the interval could even be longer - as long as every 15,000 to 35,000 miles.

But That's Not All ....

Other factors that may affect how often you need an oil change are:

  • Your driving habits. If you drive like a maniac and do jackrabbit starts, heavy acceleration and high speed driving, this may warrant more frequent oil change;

  • The climate where you drive in - Either way, extreme heat or extreme cold will affect your maintenance schedule;

  • Road conditions. If you drive on dirt roads, it can affect how often you change oil for your vehicle;

  • Your vehicle’s age.  An old engine burns oil and results in dirty oil in a shorter time period;

  • You carry heavy loads

The best guide, however, on the type of oil to use and the frequency of oil changes still is, ultimately, to follow your car manufacturer’s recommendation in your owner’s manual.

Keeping your engine at an optimum level does not only mean regular oil changes. You also need to regularly check your oil level in between changes to ensure that you don’t encounter problems. This is when you need to locate where you dipstick is. Your car needs to be in a level position for you to check your oil level. Take you dipstick and wipe it clean and reinsert. Take it out and check the level. If it’s at the full, then you’re good. If you are at or below the add mark, then it means you’re running a quart low and need to add this much to your crankcase. In the case of ‘in betweens’, you can make an estimate of how much to add. The distance between the full and the add marks represents a quart.
